Two medals for host nation Turkey in Athletics World Indoor Championships


Host nation of the World Indoor Championships, Turkey, is celebrating after securing its first medals in history of the championships.

Asli Cakir Alptekin and Ilham Tanui Ozbilen both won medals in track events in Istanbul. Alptekin picked up a bronze medal in the women’s 1500m finals while Ozbilen claimed a silver medal in the men’s 1500m at the Atakoy Athletics Arena in Istanbul.

Speaking after her medal win, Alptekin said: “The support of the crowd gave me extra strength in the final 200 metres. I am so happy to have won a medal.” Alptekin is officially the first Turkish athlete to win a medal in the World Indoor Championships.

The championships have so far been a success for host nation Turkey. Turkey will be looking to pick up more medals before the championship end and will be looking for the hosting of the event to act as a springboard towards a successful bid for the 2020 Olympic Games.
People living in Turkey will be cheering the success of Alptekin and Ozbilen as the first two Turkish athletes to ever win medals at the indoor championships.
